Ah, those skies. My, how I love me some purdy skies. This was the sky in Northern Virginia on July 30 of this year. It was out of this world. All of these shots were made with my iPhone 6s from a shopping mall parking lot!

I give you “King Neptune!” See the crown on the upper left? Then the eyes, nose and mouth below? And the long ZZ Top beard? And the left forearm reaching out to punch you? How awesome are clouds?

I photographed this beautiful sunset last night in my sister’s neighborhood.

I shot this panorama yesterday in San Antonio, TX. See the heart-shaped cloud? How cool was that? I shot this with my iPhone 6s and added the border with the Snapseed app (my favorite!).

Last night’s sky was so painterly with a brilliant blue background, storm clouds, wispy cotton trails, and glowing gold patches of sunlight. I went a little nuts photographing it with my iPhone 6 (border added in Snapseed app) in a mall parking lot. Beauty is found in the most mundane places!

Perhaps it’s the lack of tall buildings to block the view, or maybe the weather patterns are different in the region, but the skies in Texas are just spectacular (and nearly every day they offer up something worth photographing!). I shot a plethora of sky vistas and cloud formations while I was in Texas for my niece’s wedding in October. This one caught my eye in the parking lot outside a Vietnamese restaurant in San Antonio. I immediately saw a face and thought, “Einstein!” I shared the image with my FB friends and the conversation took flight. My favorite response was from my FB friend and fellow blogger, Erik Gauger. He described in detail what he saw and then used his creative skills to bring the figure to life. (FYI, I’ve blogged about Erik’s gorgeous, award-winning photography/narrative/nature/travel website, but in case you missed it, check it out here: http://www.notesfromtheroad.com/)

Some people think I have my head in the clouds…and they just may be right because I’m always searching for interesting ones to photograph, such as these unusual criss-cross clouds over Gullfoss, a waterfall located in the canyon of Hvítá river in southwest Iceland.

I came across this lovely poem by German playwright, poet and theater director Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) on many websites and the translation from German to English wasn’t the same on any of the sites, but this was my favorite that I wanted to share. Accompanying his poem is my photo of a lone cloud over Garvan Woodland Gardens in Arkansas.
Memory of Maria A
One day in blue-moon September,
Silent under a plum tree,
I held her, my silent pale love
in my arms like a fair and lovely dream.
Above us in the summer skies,
Was a cloud that caught my eye.
It was so white and high up,
and when I looked up, it was no longer there.
And since that moment, many a September
Came sailing in, then floated down the stream.
No doubt the plum trees were cut down for timber
And if you ask what happened to my dream
I shall reply: I cannot now remember
Though what you have in mind I surely know.
And yet her face: I really don’t recall it.
I just recall I kissed long ago.
Even the kiss would have been long forgotten
If that white cloud had not been in the sky.
I know the cloud, and shall know it forever,
It was pure white and, oh, so very high.
Perhaps the plum trees still are there and blooming.
Perhaps that woman has six children too.
But that white cloud bloomed only for a moment:
When I looked up, it vanished in the blue.
I shot this image with my iPhone last Sunday when I was out running errands. I don’t love the elements in the foreground, but I love the cloud formations and wanted to share this dramatic Sunday sky!

I know I’ve said it, but I’ll say it again (and again): Texas (at least for this cloud-crazed photographer) remains undefeated for stellar sky displays, hands down. There’s an amazing show virtually every day!
