Ah, those skies. My, how I love me some purdy skies. This was the sky in Northern Virginia on July 30 of this year. It was out of this world. All of these shots were made with my iPhone 6s from a shopping mall parking lot!

I give you “King Neptune!” See the crown on the upper left? Then the eyes, nose and mouth below? And the long ZZ Top beard? And the left forearm reaching out to punch you? How awesome are clouds?

Last night’s sky was so painterly with a brilliant blue background, storm clouds, wispy cotton trails, and glowing gold patches of sunlight. I went a little nuts photographing it with my iPhone 6 (border added in Snapseed app) in a mall parking lot. Beauty is found in the most mundane places!

The weather man got it right on the nose this time. They predicted snow in the D.C. metropolitan area about 1:00 p.m. on Friday (it started at 12:45) and it’s still going this Saturday night. We have more than two feet of the white stuff at this point. Our area doesn’t usually get accumulation like this—the last time we had this much was in 2003. Usually we get 3-4 snowfalls ranging from 2-4 inches and it usually melts within a few days. I have a feeling this stuff will be around for weeks to come. Before the storm…shot somewhere near Lakagígar (Craters of Laki) in the south of Iceland

Last night in Iceland…I got to see the sun set (it’s rare to see it since it sets well after 11:00 p.m. in the summer!). And actually, I don’t think it ever really quite fully sets—there are more than 20+ hours of sunlight in the summer!

(Doesn’t sound quiet as poetic as that book, Snow Falling on Cedars, does it?)

I photographed the same sunset through the large tree in our backyard garden.

I know I’ve said it, but I’ll say it again (and again): Texas (at least for this cloud-crazed photographer) remains undefeated for stellar sky displays, hands down. There’s an amazing show virtually every day!

Originally posted 3.31.2009. While preparing for my photography exhibit, I came across this photo in my archives and thought I’d share it again. This image was shot off of I-95, just a few miles from home. As my regular visitors may have noticed, I am quite fond of photographing skies. Images like this are the reason that I always carry a Nikon Coolpix with me. I can’t always carry my pro gear on my daily jaunts, but the quality I get from this point-n-shoot is great!

I discovered this one above the local Target store at 8:00 a.m. the day after Christmas and couldn’t pass it up!

So cold your camera will stick to your cheek (the ones on your face)!

Such is life…but it was such a spectacular sky that I simply had to share this image I shot last weekend. And no, the color was not enhanced in Photoshop! We thought about driving back home (just a few miles away), but after I shot this image, the sky started changing quickly and the opportunities waned. Just picture mountains and saquaro cactus silhouetted against this awesome sky. Sometimes ya gotta work with what ya have and shoot where you are.
Photographed with my Nikon Coolpix L110 near Ladysmith in Caroline County, VA on 10.31.2011; the leaves are just beginning to turn
